Currently, if you, as the operator of the site, offer a membership with a trial period, the user MUST take this trial instead of being able to decide whether to take advantage of the trial period now or whether they are already ready to sign up for full membership. Therefore, it would make sense to let users choose for themselves: sign up for membership with or without a trial period.
